To Vote Or Not To Vote

Is That Even A Question?

9
To Vote Or Not To Vote
Olivier Douliery

There's people who are so passionate about the presidential election they are prepared to riot if it doesn't go their way...including certain candidates (looking at you Trump). There are others who don't care much about the election at all. They don't even plan to go vote. Which is unsurprising considering, according to FairVote, only about 60% of people who are eligible to vote in United States will actually vote during presidential election years. That percentage is even smaller during midterm elections and still lower for other elections.

But you know what these non-voters will actually have an opinion on? Whoever wins the election.

No matter who that is.

Which is a bit ridiculous really. If you are upset that the candidate you voted for wasn't elected, I can absolutely understand being upset about the results. I can even understand being upset about the results of an election when you are not eligible to vote. However, if you didn't vote even though you are eligible to do so, I have no sympathy for you whatsoever. You did not even vote! Why should people listen to you complain about the results of the election when you didn't even try to vote for anyone else.

Seriously, if you are an active voter you've seen it and if not, you've likely done it! "I'm not voting! My vote won't matter any ways! I don't care / like the candidates / pay attention to that stuff!" (Circle the answer which best describes you.) FAST FORWARD TO ELECTION RESULTS. "Oh great! This person won. Can't stand them! They're too liberal / conservative / moderate / weak / rude. They'll ruin the country / state / county / town / city." (Again, circle the answers that suit you.)

I understand that voting doesn't quite provide as much satisfaction as other activities that can consume the day such as YouTube browsing or video games or murder (I don't know you, I don't know your life). But it is important as a voting eligible individual to help in determining who will be in charge in the government. If you can be so passionate about results of an election AFTER voting has passed, why not try influencing the result BEFORE it is to late to do anything about it???

Since I'm not sure whether this will be published before or after election day, I encourage you to vote if it is not too late to do so. If it is too late...

In the event that Hillary Clinton has been elected:

Well...it could be worse. Hopefully, she's not actually a criminal and all of the suspicion surrounding her truly was nested in sexist ideologies that a woman shouldn't hold a position of power.

Trump and his supporters may be rioting so please remain indoors and away from walls and windows easily punctured by bullets. Have a pleasant four years! Hopefully, Congress will actually look at a Supreme Court nominee!

In the event that Donald Trump has been elected:

The exits to the United States are north to enter Canada, south to enter Mexico, or for dedicated swimmers, there's the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Congratulations on now finally understanding refugees and the pain of rejection from nations including your homeland! If you happen to be enjoying the Fourth Reich, congrats to you too! Hope the barbecue sauce doesn't stain your white robes - *cough* I mean button ups. I hope the impending nuclear war is as GREAT as you hoped.

In the event that a third party candidate has been elected:

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...ha.

Wait, seriously?

In the event that there is a merciful God / Allah / extraterrestrial race (circle whichever occured):

Oh thank you for the complete and total annihilation / enslavement of the human race before we did it to ourselves!

Seriously, I hope we make / have made the right decision (one more time, circle which applies).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
