There are a lot of great perks that go along with Greek life, volunteering for Faster Horses being one of them. For those of you who don't know, Faster Horses is a three-day country music festival held at Michigan International Speedway. For those of us who volunteered it was three days of hard work, dealing with the hot and/or stormy weather (take your pick because we had both), and a little bit of fun of course.
Some of the guys from Wayne State's Delta Nu chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha worked the portable drink carts for the festival, along with some girls from Kappa Delta, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and Delta Zeta. There were some other volunteers as well. Ten percent of the money we made went toward the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Over the course of the weekend there were many obstacles we faced, but, as any true Michigander would, we made the best of the rain and mud and got down to business.
After a clear night on Friday, there was bound to be something that would happen, and sure enough in comes a huge storm that suspends the entire festival.
I stumbled across this video from mlive.com of the crowd being told to seek shelter Saturday night after word of high winds and a strong thunderstorm coming. Lucky for us, we got to shut down the portables early. Not so lucky for us, they stopped running the shuttles so we had an hour-and-a-half walk back to our campsite in the rain. By the time we got back you can bet that my boyfriend's and my tent (and everything in it) was soaked, so here's a shout-out for big tents and good friends because four of us slept in one for our last night there.
Now, the rain was one thing, but then we had the heat. Anybody who lives in Michigan knows that this summer hasn't been much of a summer. Well, this past weekend I guess Mother Nature decided to prove us all wrong because we had 90 degree weather almost every day. And let me tell you, sleeping in a tent when it's that hot is anything but comfortable.
On the bright side, we were allowed to keep any tips we made, and I got to see Carrie Underwood perform. (Even if it was from pretty far away). There was a great line-up for the performances which included Brad Paisley, Lee Brice, Thomas Rhett, and Florida Georgia Line, to name a few. Overall, I had a good weekend. There were moments when I decided that I would never do it again; I said I hated camping but I know when next year rolls around, I'll probably be right back at it because it's all about the experience, right?
Even with all of the issues, nothing beats live music and good people.
