The Voice of a Humanitarian

Longing for peace and safety for all

The Voice of a Humanitarian
Syrian refugee

When I was younger, I visited the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and was just in complete shock that the United States did not intervene in such a tragic affair. My mother assured me that now with technology and communication the way it was, that the United States would never just watch, and offer a helping hand too late, as other people were suffering.

Now, we are doing the exact opposite. As many fears circulate the hot button topic of Syrian Refugees and their admittance to the United States, I would like to provide you with the positive side of this topic. As you continue reading, I ask you keep one question in your mind, “How bad would it have to get, for you and your family to run, walk, or swim away from the country you call home?”

These images of horror and death we see in the media paint the harsh reality that these innocent people are living in every day. These harsh realities are only photos and stories for us and are incredibly hard to imagine happening to us. A memorable story in the news recently was of Omran, a young boy, bloodied and battered by the civil war within his country. His family survived, but his neighborhood, blasted to rubble. By allowing refugees to seek safety, we are welcoming men, women and children; children who have seen too much tragedy and death at such a tender age.

Life is a basic human right, and these lives will be protected if America becomes more like our Northern Neighbor, welcoming Syrians in, with open arms.

I know what you’re all thinking, “How can we let potential terrorists into our country?” Thousands of refugees have been interviewed, and admitted into our country, and not one has been arrested under terrorism charges. Where we focus on the foreign aspect of this controversial topic, we neglect the fact that radicalization is also happening within the borders of the United States.

By preventing refugees from entering our country, we essentially are helping terrorist groups such as ISIS regain members. Approximately 15,000 ISIS fighters were killed in Russian Airstrikes. With these dwindling numbers on the Islamic State’s side, ISIS will work diligently to regain a following by implementing harsh propaganda into the lives of the desperate. With potential members already outside the borders of Syria, ISIS will ultimately have a more strenuous path in front of them, in order to strengthen their regime.

This is not just another Liberal testimony for peace and change, but a testimony for human rights. How can we just watch as people are committing crimes against humanity to a peaceful population?

Now, reconsider the first question and put yourselves in the shoes of the weak, educate yourself before making assumptions, and feel empathy for those suffering in front of our eyes.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
