The VMAs are known for being one of the most unpredictable and fun award shows, so the predictability of the night (Miley Cyrus smokes weed, guys) was probably the last thing the producers wanted. While it might not have been as iconic as other years, the performances still rocked— while others at least tried too. Here is my ranking of the performances last night, from worst to best.
1. Macklemore doing Macklemore stuff and other people
Coming in first (or last) is Macklemore and the other people he was with on stage. This was just one of those performances that I didn’t get. Maybe it’s because I didn’t know any of the music or the other rappers, or just that I am confused by Macklemore himself. Either way, I sat there scratching my head through it all, and it felt like most people did the same before promptly forgetting that it happened.
2.Miley Cyrus “singing” “Dooo It!”
Pretty typical Miley Cyrus—weird and over-the-top with very little point. Any artistic value? Debatable. Honestly, since she has been doing the crazy shtick for so long at this point, the performance was rather boring. Nothing new was brought to the table.
3. The Weeknd singing “Can’t Feel My Face”
What was Abel Tesfaye, whose stage name is The Weeknd, wearing? As my roommate lovingly put it, “a garbage bag?” He stopped signing for each chorus for some reason? Was he lip-syncing the whole time? Or does he not sing the chorus in the song? It was confusing and not very memorable, which was sad since he has some great music.
4. Demi Lovato singing “Cool for the Summer”
The performance didn’t sound that great—it came across as forced and whiny. But I guess we all know that she didn’t lip sync. And then Iggy Azalea showed up, and no one could hear her. The final confetti scene was as much of a mess as the rest of the performance. On the plus side, she did look great.
5. Tori Kelly singing “Should’ve Been Us”
It was good. That's about it. She looked good and sounded awesome. But it wasn’t the most exciting performance. Props to her for being able to play her own guitar and having such an amazing voice.
6. Justin Bieber singing “Where Are Ü Now” and other songs
As a self-proclaimed Bieber hater, loving “Where Are Ü Now” and then this performance was hard to admit to. I didn’t know the song(s?) that came on after, but the lights were super cool, and the beats were pretty chill. However, then he started crying at the end. That was strange.
7. Pharrell singing “Freedom”
A pretty classic Pharrell performance. The music was unique from the other performances of the night and really just plain good. It was one of the performances that I enjoyed listening to the most. It wasn't the most exciting of all, but really how could it follow that Kanye speech?
8. 21 Pilots and A$AP Rocky doing a medley
Pretty unexpected combination, but one of the most welcome. IMO, the collaboration killed it. Those lights were crazy cool, and it looked like a super fun time. Probably the performance I wish I could have experienced live the most, but maybe I'm biased because I'm already a huge fan of each of them.
9. Nicki Minaj and (surprise!) Taylor Swift singing “Trini Dem Girls,” “The Night Is Still Young,” and “Bad Blood”
This was a great way to start off the VMAs. We got greeted by a classic Nicki Minaj seated on her throne, killing it in her red ensemble and headdress. And then out of the stage pops Taylor. The performance obviously referenced the Twitter feud that occurred about a month ago. But in the end, both divas slayed the audience and hugged each other and made us all hope for a world of peace.
