Come For Friends (Leave For Food And Sleep!)

Visiting my college for the first time after graduation was both fantastic and strange. I loved seeing so many friends and catching up on things that won't fit in messages via Facebook. However, there were things about college I hadn't thought would be weird to go back to for a weekend and they kind of were.

For one, walking everywhere. I had walked everywhere when I was in college and it wasn't too bad....Okay with my muscle issues, it could be a slight issue to walk everywhere. I got pretty used to it though! Going back to that after spending most of my days sitting at a computer to apply to jobs was not a fun time. I'm glad I brought comfortable shoes!

Then, there's the sleeping and eating schedule. Oh, dear. I can't sleep well on a regular night. I had an average of four hours a night while I was at college this past year and I am barely getting an average of seven hours a night now. To have my sleep thrown off further left me exhausted. Happy I was there but completely exhausted. As far as food is concerned, I have been having three meals a day, every day since graduation after having spent most of college eating two meals at a max but that could be rare. So to go back to one meal a day really threw me off for a bit as I would eat a larger meal than usual and not want to eat again all day.

There's also just how heavy the college food can be. Donuts and fast food type of eating after eating more fruits and veggies was pretty difficult as delicious as it was! I also hadn't realized how much I missed my school's bagel and egg sandwiches with bacon and cheese until I had one in my hands again. As there were food trucks on campus for once, I was also able to try beer-battered hot dog bites which were awesome. It felt odd to have that type of food all weekend but it was worth it for one weekend. Plus the walking helped work a lot of it off.

Probably one of the best strange things about college that I had forgotten about until I visited was how easy it was to run into people you knew. I was so happy that I just came across my friends without needing to make a lot of concrete plans. I came across two of them while they were driving and riding around in the night bus of the college. Apparently, they'd thought they were spotting me all around campus during the semester and kept forgetting I had graduated. So it was great that they actually had seen me for once and we got to hang out on the bus for a while. I also managed to visit on the first weekend of an event I participated in every year at college for Halloween. So I was able to catch all of the people I knew would be part of that event. It was great to get to see everyone and not put too much pressure on people to be free.

I am so glad my friend and I took the chance to visit our college. I was able to see so many people I love and I even have plans to see others during winter break. I didn't realize how much I'd adjusted to post-grad life until I went to the college. It was strange to try jumping back into the college lifestyle but it was more than worth it to hug all of my friends! I can't wait to see them again but I can definitely hold off on jumping into the student life once more!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
