Last week, I did something that most college students would think was a little crazy, especially after finishing my finals: I visited my best friend's nutrition class at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Massachusetts. Considering she studies nursing, a science-based major and I study marketing, a business-based major, I knew that this was going to be material that I have never seen before, which was exciting!
As college students, it's not often that we get the chance to learn about subjects that aren't related to our major in the classroom setting. Even if we are interested in a different subject, we don't always find the time to learn about it by reading up on it, talking to a professional in the field or taking an extra class.
During the class, taught by Professor Comeau, we learned about the chemical compound alcohol and the effects that it has on our bodies. My friend, Brianna, has learned about various other compounds and nutrients during the semester, but I was able to get just a taste of the material during the one hour and fifteen-minute session.
I learned...
- Science is interesting (and extremely challenging)
- To appreciate anyone who chooses to major in science
- A college class is still a college class, no matter where or what subject
- Everyone should appreciate all majors, not just their own
I have a passion for learning, not just learning about business and marketing. There are ample opportunities for learning all around us and I think that as students we should take advantage of them. You never know what you might learn!
If you enjoy learning, consider going to a friend's class. I wasn't exactly interested in the subject at first, but it was invigorating and exciting to learn something completely different. Give it a shot sometime because you never know what else you can learn!
There are opportunities to learn from anyone and almost anything around --you just have to look!
