I have lived in the area most of my life and nothing is quite like it.

4 Reasons To Visit Holland, Michigan

Here are four reasons to visit Holland Michigan:

1. Beaches

While I have been to countless oceans with white sand beaches, nothing quite compares to Michigan’s shores. Of course, I am biased to say that Holland has the best… but, I think plenty would agree with me. These beaches don’t have the white, soft, warm, seashell-filled perfect beaches they might advertise about for vacations in the south. However, our sand squeaks… does Florida’s sand do that? I don’t think so. Confused? You can only understand if you find out for yourself what this means.

2. More Beaches

There are a few really great beaches to venture off to. Some with surrounding blue waters, which may or may not be cold... you can really never know in Michigan. However, refreshing either way. Whether you choose the popular Holland State Park, with a gorgeous view from the pier and Big Red (a lighthouse) not far behind you. Or, for a more reserved, relaxing experience, Laketown, Oval beach and a few more are a great choice. There’s a beach for any kind of experience.

3. Checking out the wilderness, and what? The beach? You guessed it, more beach.

If you have already checked out the beach, or are more of a wilderness, nature-oriented person, or you just want to put on a cute outfit and take a really cool cliché picture at the top with a great view, there are plenty of places to climb staircases to the top to find a wonderful view of the beach or the river and town on the other side. Don’t worry, for all those out there who say they love hiking but die at the first 10 steps—like me—you will survive. It’s really not that bad and the view is worth it! The seemingly never ending trees enclose the whole climb, leaving you to the numerous squirrels running around and birds singing throughout the woods. And if you pick the right time, I’ve heard the sunsets are quite romantic… just don’t miss them, that’s awkward. Trust me.

4. Downtown

OK, now we're stepping away from the beach. Surprise! Downtown Holland is known around the U.S. for its rich Dutch heritage and the events that happen year round. Especially Tulip Time (check this out, it’s worth it). The unique part about Holland is that the culture can be seen all around. With all kinds of small businesses owned and run by locals, it makes for a welcoming, or welkoming as the Dutch would write it, and friendly experience. With great food, fun events, and shopping for all ages, you are guaranteed to find something you enjoy.

So, if you are looking for a different place to come visit for a day, week, or even summer, Holland is a place you won't forget. I have lived in the area most of my life and nothing is quite like it. I am in love with the beaches and small downtown visits; so I suppose this would make sense. But I believe, if you decided to check it out, you would fall in love with it all too.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
