If you grew up in Miami, you’re most probably a UM fan or an FSU fan. UM fans were hoping to win this game against Virgnia Tech on Thursday night. Unfortunately, Miami lost its third consecutive game Thursday against Virgnia Tech 37-16. .
We all know that part of being a football fan is being passionate and defending your team at all cost. Everyone usually talks trash about their rival team and that’s okay, to a certain extent. This time Virginia Tech students have gone too far, disgusting type of far. Before the game started on Thursday night I saw this tweet on my twitter feed. I immediately thought how disgusting and offensive this sign was. It was referencing late Marlins star Jose Fernandez. Sources say that this tweet came from VT Barstool, who posted a picture of a banner that read: “Bury the U next to Jose Fernandez RIP.”
The great thing is that when any type of news or information is posted on social media, it tends to run like wildfire. As soon as this tweet went live, other twitter users started condemning this tweet as inappropriate and disrespectful. Even some FSU students defended UM, and we all know the rivalry that these two Florida teams have against each other. Even other University "Stoolies" under the Barstool Unmbrella responded to this savage post.
Even if you’re a canes fan or not this post is way out of hand, you don’t joke about someone who passed away to make a sleazy joke. Virginia Tech actually released a statement saying that Hoakie fans are better than this and that they will take measurements against those who made this atrocious sign.
The tragic death of Jose Fernandez hit the Miami-dade community very hard. He was the face of the Miami marlins, and inspiration to our community that dreams come true and other than being incredibly talented, his infectious personality is unforgettable.
Fernandez and two other gentlemen lives were tragically cut short when Fernandez's boat hit a jetty off the coast of Miami Beach.
Family, fans, friends, and fellow players have all honored Fernandez in their own ways. The University of Miami players actually honored Fernandez by wearing a number 16 decal on their helmets.
Football rivalry's are OK to a certain extent. This was way out of line and should be an example to other schools, teams, fans of what not to do. I mean it's common sense to most of us but some people out there just have a lot to learn about social norms. Maybe Virgnia Tech should make a "Do's and Don'ts" class a requirement for these savage kids.
