On July 10–11, 2010, roughly 1,400 people gathered in the Hyatt Regency Plaza in Los Angeles for the first VidCon.
This year, VidCon celebrated its Seventh Annual VidCon, with more than 25,000 people in attendance.
VidCon is the largest online-video conference for fans and creators alike. Co-founded by John and Hank Green, VidCon started off as a way for fans and creators to meet and find other with the same interests. During the past few years, VidCon has seen impressive growth, after hosting 12,000 attendees in 2012 to more than 18,000 in 2013 to the most recent 25,000 attendees.
With 80 percent of YouTube views coming in from outside the United States, it only makes sense to expand outside of the United States. Instead of expanding to other parts of the United States, VidCon instead opted to establish two international locations: VidCon Europe in the Netherlands and VidCon Australia in Melbourne. Both events will be taking place in 2017.
About 10 percent of VidCon attendees come from outside the United States, so the only reasonable way of expansion would be to go overseas, becoming a cost-effective option for those who cannot make it out to Anaheim for the annual convention. The two locations are centralized in their regions, allowing fans easy access in transportation.
“We are excited that we can bring the VidCon experience to Europe and Australia, where the fan and creator communities are so strong and truly thriving,” says VidCon co-founder, Hank Green.
VidCon Europe will be taking place on April 8–9, 2017, and VidCon Australia will be taking place in September. Both events will feature panels and workshops in line with VidCon Anaheim's events.
