Most American citizens would consider 2016 a turbulent political environment. There are polarizing arguments about what direction the country should be heading in, who to vote for in an election rife with shady dealings, tabloid headlines, corruption and reality television moments during televised debates. The news can be a source of embarrassment or a source of entertainment, either way the state of journalistic integrity is also waning. In hopes to combat the current cycle of negative news this article presents a way to instill some hope in the democratic process in the United States of America.
However, every so often there are moments in which real news articles get buried at the bottom of the social media feed, or have a small blurb on major news publications. There is good news out there and it just so happens even as the country spirals out of control or engages in divisive rhetoric there happened to be a story that didn't get much press. It just so happens that the Supreme Court of The United States upheld a ban on gun ownership for those who have committed acts of domestic violence. The federal ban is a victory for victims of abuse but also a victory for more sensible gun laws in a country with a violence problem. Although the ruling does little to address mental health issues or greater issues regarding gun laws that protect ownership while protecting against senseless acts of violence, the ruling still happens to be a beacon of light at the end of a long dark tunnel in American political considerations.
The Obama administration is pleased with the ruling according to spokesperson Eric Schultz. The ruling was in direct response to a case in which two men were arguing that their constitutional right to bear arms be upheld due to the acts of domestic violence being in the heat of an argument and not intentional or pre-meditated acts of violence. The court ruled against them in this instance and has determined that the ban will be upheld. Some are praising this ruling as a victory for women and other victims of domestic violence as the statistics show that women who are victims of homicide are victims of spousal abuse as well.
I personally applaud the court for the ruling and would like to see more sensible work be done in the ways of protecting American freedom, liberty and lives. We can only hope for the next Supreme Court Justice who is to be appointed after this election cycle, to be fair and just in rulings that consider gun laws, mental health and other serious political considerations. Remember to get out and vote for the next President of the United States as the next sitting President will be determining what type of Justice will sit on the court.
