I never envisioned myself writing about Kim Kardashian, but here I am writing about Kim Kardashian.
Except, this isn't really about Kim, which is the only reason I even care.
Apparently, Kim got robbed while in Paris and got millions of dollars worth of jewelry stolen from her. While some are debating the truth of this story, that's not my focus tonight.
True or untrue is not what disturbs me most, in fact, it's not even the story that's disturbing me most -- it's the comments ensuing on social media. It's the public conversation surrounding the story.
I've seen a plethora of comments by now just within the past hour that go something like "well that's what she gets for flaunting all that money around."
These are people that are under the assumption that the robbery actually happened, and still insist that she "got what she deserved."
First of all, how did she deserve getting robbed? Were her belongings obtained illegally? Or is it just because you think it went against better judgment to bring precious items in tow while traveling?
Does owning precious items make her a criminal?
Now that we've attempted to dissect this logic (mostly unsuccessfully), let's get to the disturbing nature of this comment:
Claiming that someone ought to be robbed because they brought fine things with them is analogous to claiming that women in short skirts ought not to be surprised or outraged if they get raped.
Perhaps more alarming is the rate at which I'm seeing these comments.
Do this many people truly have a victim-blaming mentality and simply keep quiet when rapes are in the news?
Sure, awful people make similar comments about rape, but most realize they'll get blasted on Facebook for publicly expressing that opinion.
But somehow, people are very openly expressing how much they believe Kim K is at fault and "got what was coming to her," right now.
And what's worse? Tons of people giving a virtual thumbs up in agreement.
I'm no Kim K fan by any measure, but I do know that no victim deserves to be blamed, no matter how rich they are or how short their skirt is.
