There has been a particular artist that I can't stop listening to, his name is Vic Mensa from Chicago, Illinois. Vic Mensa is a grammy-nominated artist and is signed to Roc Nation, Jay-Z's record label. I discovered him while I was watching a t.v show called Noisey, on Viceland following Chicago hip-hop artists.
He gives visual imagery in his songs about life in Chicago and the dangers that their society faces daily including gang violence and police brutality. He advocates social justice and pleads for change while still including softer songs that you can chill to.
He quickly gained the attention of huge names including Chicago native Kanye West and even landed a feature from Yeezy on his song "U Mad". Mensa was also the song-writer for Kayne West's "All Day", which was nominated for a grammy as Best Rap Song.
One thing that is for sure, is that Vic Mensa does not let these issues cripple him but instead he embraces it and uses his music to create a platform to let these issues be heard.
