Lately, there has been a lot of hype over what is deemed by some viewers as “The scariest movie ever made.” As a horror flick fanatic, I decided that I should take a look for myself at the movie that has left people with nightmares. Don’t worry, this is a non-spoiler zone, so you can continue reading!
The movie I am referring to is none other than the Netflix horror/drama film "VERONICA." This movie is said to be loosely based off of true happenings in Madrid, Spain in the early 1990s. The Spanish film follows a girl named Veronica and her decision to dabble in the dark art of conducting a séance with a Quiji board. Veronica and her friends, believing they have come in contact with her late father with the board, soon find out that they have attracted something much more sinister. Veronica soon begins to lose sight of what is real and what is in her imagination.
Forced to take care of her three siblings while her mother is constantly working, she must protect her family and herself from the evil spirit that wishes to consume her. The all Spanish film was written by Fernando Navarro, Paco Plaza as well as directed by Paco Plaza. It was released on Netflix at the beginning of March, where it spiked in popularity in the United States. "Veronica" has a 6.3/10 star rating with IMBD, while Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 88%.
Many people took to Twitter stating their opinions on the film. While some thought the movie was terrifying, others believe it was nothing special.
Overall, I thought the movie had a great storyline. It was entertaining and definitely creepy in many ways. The film makes you really pay attention to get the full storyline and to see things that are happening in the background of the main action. The scenes where the demon is present are definitely bone-chilling and very high in excitement. When I watched this movie, I went in believing that I might not sleep that night from what the reviews had prepared me for.
As for how frightening this movie is anticipated to be, I believe the amount of fear it instills in someone really depends on the person. I believe people who are jumpy and easily frightened will think this movie is absolutely terrifying. For those who are not easily spooked, this movie wasn’t really that scary. It was creepy in many ways and I thought the film overall was great, but I wasn’t jumping out of my seat or hiding my face. I would say this movie is comparable to the conjuring movies. The flim "VERONICA" keeps you entertained and has a good plot with many jump scares, but it isn’t going to keep you from sleeping for a week. If you are easily scared, this might be a different case for you!
