Christians, it’s that time of the year: VBS. If you have already been a VBS leader in the past, you know what you are getting into. You probably know how scary and challenging it can be. If this is your first year as a VBS leader, God is surely going to challenge you. I saw a video on Facebook about how being a VBS leader is like being Captain Jack Sparrow when he is being chased by the cannibals. It is quite accurate. I figured I would tell the full story of VBS leading through “Pirates of the Caribbean.” VBS leading is a blessing. This is just a bit of humor relief for that time of the year.
1. When the kids first enter through the doors it feels like this.
Kids are adorable and they are the future, but they can be scary. Children have so much excess energy that they can often be mistaken for savages. Of course, we mainly feel this way because we don’t understand the origin of their energy.
2. What you like feel doing to that one kid who just will not behave.
Let’s be honest. We have all felt like doing this to that one kid each year. This one kid normally doesn’t pay attention, follow instructions, or show respect. This kid normally has a shocking mouth too. It is during this time that we normally ask God for help in order to ensure our sanity.
3. When the kids are allowed play time, and you’re making sure they are not doing anything dangerous like sneaking off.
Kids often do not see danger when they are in it. As a VBS leader, it is our job to supervise those children and be sure that they are safe. It is during this time that God gives us zoomed in binocular vision.
4. When you feel like escaping after the kids have had sugar.
Children with sugar can be scarier than any horror movie. They become wild monkeys! If you are a laid back person, this can be known as "the contaminated zone."
5. Your expression when the kids won’t hush during the lesson.
We are human. When kids do not pay attention and are being rude, we can get a little cranky.
6. Your face on the last day when you realize you will miss those kids.
Even though VBS is a challenge, we cannot help but fall in love with all of those children. We become to know the kids and get used to them. When it’s over, we wonder if we did God’s will correctly by teaching His word to the Children. Then, we pray that Jesus watches over them, because our time in their lives is over for now.
VBS is a blessing
from God. He uses it to spread His word to children in an
adventurous way. It’s a genius way of witnessing to children. VBS is such a
blessing, and that is why all VBS leaders participate every year. VBS is
something we don’t want to miss, because kids are extraordinary
creations by God.
