Vans' New Harry Potter Collection Is The Perfect Evidence As To Why Ravenclaw And Hufflepuff House Needs More Representation

You can't make several detailed shoe designs for Gryffindor and Slytherin and hand Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff generic designs and expect people to just be okay with it.

Vans' New Harry Potter Collection Is The Perfect Evidence As To Why Ravenclaw And Hufflepuff House Needs More Representation

Vans are usually known for coming out with some pretty cool collaborative collections. In the past, they've done Disney, Marvel, and even Van Gogh.

So when the company announced that they were teaming up with Harry Potter to make a "magical" line, thousands of Harry Potter fans got their wallets ready to spend their money on yet another pair of shoes.

But, when launch day came around, a lot of people looked at the options and were left unsatisfied and felt cheated. These people, like myself, were either Ravenclaws or Hufflepuffs. Vans had done us dirty just like every other brand out there that sells Harry Potter merchandise.

When you go into, say, Hot Topic, and walk to the Harry Potter section, you are greeted with a sea of red (Gryffindor) and green (Slytherin). Which is nice, if you belong to either of those houses. But if you're not, you have to dig through clothing racks and look behind other things with the hope of seeing blue (Ravenclaw)or yellow (Hufflepuff).

Gryffindor, of course, gets the largest amount of merch since pretty much all of the protagonists were Gryffindors and then the antagonists were Slytherins.

In the original movies, there were a few background Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, but it really wasn't until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them did we finally see a Hufflepuff main character. Thankfully, Hufflepuff is getting some more recognition and respect.

Still, that doesn't make it fair for Vans to put out several shoes geared towards Gryffindors and Slytherins, and then one pair each for Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. With designs that are lazy and subpar.

Let's go through the collection, starting with the blatant "House" shoe designs.

1. Gryffindor Sk8-Hi

images.vans.com

A very cool design that proudly shows off your Gryffindor Pride and can be worn with most outfits.

2. Slytherin Era

Vans Shoes

I really like this design. It not only shows off Slytherin colors but also has a scaly texture, in honor of their serpent mascot.

3. Ravenclaw Authentic

Vans shoes

Now, this is just ugly. Sure, the Ravenclaw crest is on the tongue, but checkered, really? And the colors aren't even correct! They should be blue/bronze, not blue/silver/white! And what outfit would these ever go with?

4. Hufflepuff Slip-on

Vans shoes

This design is so lazy. "Let's just make a black slip-on with a yellow insert and slap a Hufflepuff Badger patch on the top!" I've seen shoes on Etsy made by Indie Brands that were more creative than this.

5.Obligatory Marauders Map Slip-on

Vans soes

The Marauders Map design is pretty iconic in the fandom, but I have to say, I personally think it's overrated. It's plastered everywhere on merch, and when it comes down to it, it's geared towards Gryffindors anyway.

6. Snitch Old Skool

Vans shoes

Okay, now these are pretty cool. The Snitch ball is a golden charm on the shoelaces and the wings spread out on either side. Plus, they can probably be for any house, so long as you love Quidditch.

7. Death Eater Sk8-Hi Platform RB

Vans shoes

Another pair for Slytherin. Although, the green metallic shift is really cool.

8. Deathly Hallows Old Skool

Vans shoes

This design is also one that can be favored by any house, but with the Deathly Hallows symbol always being associated with Harry Potter himself, it's hard not to imagine these as a Gryffindor pair as well.

9. Deathly Hallows Slip-On

Vans shoes

Same with these.

10. Daily Prophet Comfycush Era

The Daily Prophet paper print is another overused design in the Harry Potter fandom. Especially when it shows the front page with Potter being the Undesirable. Another shoe for Gryffindor!

11. Transfiguration Comfycush Sk8-Hi

images.journeys.com

This is actually my favorite pair out of the entire collection, and even though they're covered in Harry's lightning bolt scar, they can be worn by any house. Plus, they glow in the dark!

Along with the shoes, Vans has also put out designs for shirts, bags, socks, etc. You guessed right, there's only one design for Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, but plenty for Gryffindor and Slytherin.

It's sad that the books and movies have been out for so long now, and the Harry Potter fandom is growing every day, sorting more and more people into houses that aren't just Gryffindor or Slytherin, and we still can't find equal representation for merchandise.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

9 Reasons Why Friends Are Essential In College

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
