The Value Of Self-Love

I know too many people who live their lives filled with hate directed towards themselves. They don’t like what they see in the mirror, they are afraid to express their wants and needs, and they feel lesser than all those around them. This was how I am good portion of my life, constantly talking down to myself, both verbally out loud and in my head. While I am at times still guilty of this, I can now more easily tap into the positive side of my mind. The side that is honest and see clearing in the fact that no one should hate themselves. You should love yourself.

This seems like a simple concept, yet it has become more and more foreign. As we get older and become more aware, we are taught to hide our differences. We seemingly must repress or hide part of the things that make up our unique being. Simply, if it does not coincide with the majority, then it somehow offends someone. This need to hide aspects of one’s self can (and will) create built up negativity, and that negative energy will most likely be directed inward-towards yourself.

While your mind may conjure up a plethora of reasons why you are simply not good enough, or not worthy of self love, they are not real reasons. They are made up or trivial. However, I understand how hard it is to ignore the self loathing thoughts that constantly arise, but it is critical to your happiness to learn the value of self love.

When you do things from a place of love rather than hate you will find more success and joy along the way. For example, if you begin to eat well and exercise simply because you hate your body, then you find yourself more liable to revert back to not maintaining those good habits and your motivation while eventually wane, as opposed to eating well and working out because you love your body and wish to take care and better it -- you will find the latter to be more successful. With the same concept, if you go to school and study simply because you think you are stupid, then you will probably not do as well and have less motivation than if you had the mindset of knowing you are smart and can succeed.

No one else can offer the world what you have to offer, that is why you are here. The world needs you, the universe will love you once you find love for yourself. You have a unique mind within a vessel that is capable of amazing feats. Do not take yourself for granted and do not wear yourself down with hate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
