Oh Valentine's Day, the day where you can show appreciation to your loved one! Valentine's Day can be such a special time for you and your significant other or just someone you want to be with. Talking about it makes Valentine's Day sound like a good idea, but I am going to give you five reasons why Valentine's Day is really nothing but a reason for the stores to sell you (overpriced) stuffed animals, chocolate and cards.
The first time I had a real "Valentine" was really important to me. I wanted that giant pink dog or a dozen red roses because that is what I though I was supposed to have. In reality, I probably got a cheap flower and a Snickers bar, but I'm sure I loved it just as much as the really expensive gifts. Fast forward to present day and here I am saying how unnecessary Valentine's Day really is. I have been in a happy relationship for over two years and Valentine's Day doesn't make me and my boyfriend act any different.
Valentine's Day should not make you love your significant other more than you already do.
I love my boyfriend every day and even though we can't have a fancy dinner every night, we still treat each other very well and spoil each other. I don't want to be treated nicely just because it is a national holiday. To have a happy relationship, you should probably take your significant other out on a cute date or surprise them with something more than once a year.
It is stressful.
The first Valentine's Day I shared with my boyfriend actually made me very anxious. I didn't know what to get him, what to wear or where to go that day. I thought this was going to ruin my newly formed relationship. Spending time with a loved one should not be stressful. From now on I vow to spend Valentine's Day at home with popcorn, Netflix, pajamas and, of course, my boyfriend. This is way cheaper than a night out in Boston, like I used to dream of.
It can be pricey.
Flowers, chocolate, a fancy dinner and a new outfit are not cheap. Restaurants will be packed which will make it even worse. Instead of waiting for expensive food for over an hour, I would like to order a pizza and maybe some fried pickles and spend the night in the pajamas I have had since 2011.
It kinda singles people out. (no pun intended)
On a serious note, Valentine's Day can make people upset if they have no one to spend it with. When I was single on Valentine's Day I just had sleepovers with my friends imagining what it would be like to be out on a romantic date. Luckily I had my friends, but looking all over social media to see people so in love while you're home alone can't be too fun.
There are countless ways to show your love for someone.
I would much rather an adventure than a box of chocolates or a stuffed animal. Valentine's Day can be so generic and I believe every couple deserves more than overpriced gifts from CVS.
Valentine's Day is just another holiday I will not be celebrating this year.
