February 14; The day that every single person dreads. Flowers, chocolates, and teddy bears fill the grocery stores and heart shaped stickers are on all the walls at stores and restaurants. It’s not an easy holiday to avoid since stores start promoting it in January. If you are single, Valentine’s Day is irrelevant to you and you probably get pissed at every single person that is in a relationship. It really does suck. Then you start getting these crazy thoughts about how you are going to stay single forever and that you will never have a Valentine’s Day date in your lifetime. While everyone is out on a date, you are on Twitter, tweeting about how being single is the best thing ever. # independent.
Well, don’t be jealous, and try to stop the rants on Twitter, because Valentine’s Day is overrated. Honestly, you are not missing out on too much. Valentine’s Day is nothing more than an excuse to buy gifts and spend more money, especially when you are still broke as hell after Christmas. Valentine’s Day is another excuse for stores to make more money off of spoiled little girlfriends. Don’t fall for it dumb boyfriends, who buy overpriced jewelry that is only out on February 14.
Don’t get me wrong, getting presents and gifts is fun, but a whole day dedicated to it is not worth it. If you like or love someone, do you really need a specific day to love them a little extra? You should not need to have a day made in order to show your love for someone; Love is something that just happens every day if you truly care about a person.
If you are single, instead of sitting alone in your bedroom watching romantic movies, how about you go out with your girlfriends and just have fun? You don’t need to have a boyfriend or girlfriend to celebrate Valentine’s Day. No one set the rules on who gets to participate and who doesn’t on February 14, so let’s all just go out and share our love for each other. Being alone sucks, so why be alone when you don’t have to?
If everyone is out loving their boyfriends and girlfriends a little extra on that day, why not love yourself a little extra? Look at yourself a little longer in the mirror and say “damn I look fine today,” and If you are jealous of all the couples on Valentine’s Day, think about February 15 when all the candy goes on sale and you're single and ready to mingle. All the girls that are in relationships can’t have some of the fun that you can have, am I right?
When we were in middle school, we all thought that Valentine’s Day was great, but once you’ve experienced it once, it’s not all that. I’ve been on the two different sides, both with a boyfriend and being single. Having a boyfriend is pretty nice, to be honest, but making fun of couples being cheesy and lovey dovey is not that bad either. But whoever came up with the idea of Valentine’s Day, I absolutely hate you. You caused so much drama and emptied so many wallets on this day. I bet when you were single, you probably hated yourself for creating this day.
This February 14, let’s all just try and enjoy it instead of ranting about it and filling everyone’s newsfeed with gifs and pictures about being single and independent (still funny as he** though). Let the people who are in a relationship enjoy their day of overrated love. You can’t get mad over a day of love and kisses, so just let it happen. But honestly, though, let’s make February 15, Singles' Day. It’s only fair if people who are single get a day to celebrate their independence and freedom.
