Yes, Valentine’s Day Is A Fake Holiday

No stuffed bear or giant box of chocolates will change my mind.

Remember when we were in grade school, and on Valentine's Day, we made cute mailboxes? Then everyone got candy or cute stickers on "Spongebob" and "Disney" princess valentines from Walmart? Once that stopped happening, Valentine's Day definitely started to suck.

Let me start by saying I'm not anti-love or bitter, or against love. I just don't celebrate Valentine's Day.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of showing the ones we love appreciation and admiration. However, one of the biggest reasons I don't take part in Valentine's Day festivities is because it's a commercialized holiday. It's all about spending money and barely about, oh you know, LOVE.

Valentine's Day also gives the impression that you need to spend money to prove you love someone in your life. The stores and restaurants all say that you need to break the bank to prove to someone that you love them.

Of course, that's not the case. Most of the time, people do not care how much you spend, but how much effort and thought you put into it.

With that being said, V-day also becomes a low-key competition of "who loves who more."

This seemed more prominent in high school, but I still see it happening here and there. Couples compare what they got what for V-day with what OTHER couples got. Comparing who spent the most, bragging about who made the biggest public display of affection, etc. These things shouldn't matter and comparing your significant other to someone else's significant other can't be healthy. As long as that person made an effort to show that they care about you, the price should be irrelevant.

If you are going to celebrate the holiday, go for a more meaningful vibe as opposed to cheesy and expensive. Get creative! Think outside the box of chocolates.

Personally, I think being surprised is way better than waiting in anticipation.

Getting flowers randomly at work one day or finding a cute note from my significant other in the morning is so much better than waiting in anticipation all day on V-day. Those random surprises are such cute serendipitous moments that just make your day because you weren't expecting it! You also know they did it because they wanted to, not because it was expected of them. There's way less pressure and it means so much more. Show someone you love them consistently, not just on Valentine's day!

Quick shout out to the single people on Valentine's Day! You are loved!

Being single on V-day doesn't have to suck! Take the day to love yourself because, at the end of the day, the most important person who should love you is YOU. Treat yourself to a nice dinner or do something you love.

Valentine's Day isn't just about showing love to significant others, it's about showing love to ANYONE in your life. Whether that's your mom, best friends, grandma, even your pets! Celebrate the day with them and take the moment to remind them how much you love them. That small reminder of how much they mean to you is worth more than a giant teddy bear and a box of chocolates. I promise.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
