Valentine's Day is right around the corner! Hooray! You know what that means, right?! Candies, chocolates, roses, flowers, and pink galore; there really is no holiday like it.
Truth be told, I currently have mixed feelings about Valentine's Day as a whole. When I was a kid, Valentine's Day was the most fun because there was never any pressure to come up with a nice date idea or anything. We passed out cute Valentine's Day cards to each other with their names on it, along with heart-shaped lollipops, and I even remember keeping collections of them each year.
Now that I'm an adult, Valentine's Day hasn't had much meaning. Ever since the middle of my high school career, the holiday has been regarded as "just another day" (which it still technically is). And for some people, seeing everyone all "boo'd up" with their partners can be really discouraging. Trust me, I totally get it.
Another thing to consider about Valentine's Day is how over-commercialized it really is. In my personal opinion, I feel like it's designed to trick people into thinking you have to spend an insane amount of money on gifts for this one day of the year; in an effort to show them you love them. Here's the main problem with this: you should be showing them you love them every day of the year!
With that being said, this article is not to say you shouldn't celebrate Valentine's Day. You can celebrate it if you want to, and you don't even need to have a partner to do so! Take the day and celebrate it with your friends, celebrate it with your family, or even celebrate it with your cat. You can even celebrate it without spending money! It's just important to remember that Valentine's Day is not about spending money, getting gifts, and other materialistic stuff. It's about celebrating love in all forms, and remembering that love does not equate to materialism.
