Some people hate it because it reminds them of how single they are, some people love it because they can show off how in love they are.
I think both views are wrong. We should not place so much importance on a holiday that was invented so that Hallmark could make money.
Valentine's Day is meant to be about love, and love comes in many different forms. You can love a thing or a person, you can be in love with a thing or a person, you can be passionate, you can care deeply about something - these are all very different forms of the basic foundation of love.
Valentine's Day should not make people who do not have a significant other feel bad about themselves. If you're single this Valentine's day, so what? Celebrate with your friends. Treat yourself to a fancy dinner. Celebrate what you love and what you are passionate about. Maybe you love photography! If so, spend the day photographing subjects you love. Not only is this a good way to express your talents, it shows that you truly care about something, and if even if it's not love for a human being, you're still celebrating what you love - and I think that's what counts.
If you do have someone to celebrate Valentine's day with, that's awesome too. But show them everyday how much you love and appreciate them, not just on Feb. 14. Life is too short and unpredictable. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, so express how you feel today, tomorrow and every other day so that the people you care about know that you do.
No matter what you do this Valentine's Day, do it with your whole heart and remember that as long as you're celebrating love in its many forms, you're celebrating the holiday right.
