11 Things I Love About You

In our year and a half of dating, you have done so much for me. So, I wanted to make sure on Valentine's Day that I told you all the things I love about you.

1. You always make me laugh.

Maddie Robinson

Your personality and funny jokes always crack me up. I always laugh when you get tired super early like an old man, talk about how you want three monitors for your computer (because apparently, two isn't enough?), and your silly faces when we take pictures together keep a smile almost permanently on my face.

2. You're always patient and understanding.

Maddie Robinson

I know I'm not always the easiest to deal with, but no matter what you never get frustrated and love spending time with me, whether it's letting me turn off Metallica in your car and loudly singing along to tracks from High School Musical instead, letting me rope you into slow dancing when a cute song comes on, or going on mall trips even though you hate shopping. You don't find it annoying, you just laugh and play along, because, to you, any time with me is a good time.

3. You always know how to brighten my day.

Maddie Robinson

Sometimes at the end of the day, I just feel sad or grumpy. When you know I'm feeling down, you do whatever you can to improve my day, from buying me coffee ice cream to just letting me vent. You're the shoulder I cry on, and you light up my life, turning any bad day around.

4. You do these things because you just want me to be happy.

Maddie Robinson

You treat me with kindness and does special things for me because it makes you truly happy just seeing me happy, which is just one of the ways you're such a special person.

5. You give the best hugs.

Maddie Robinson

When I'm in your arms, I just feel warm, safe, and happy. I could spend forever there, where everything just feels right.

6. I love the little things that make you, you.

Maddie Robinson

There are so many things about your personality and mannerisms that make you unique. The way you drum your fingers on the steering wheel of your car, stop everything to watch a new rocket launch, and the sound of your laugh when you think something is really funny all make you the amazing man I'm so glad I met a year and a half ago.

7. You're family-oriented.

Maddie Robinson

The way you drop everything to spend time with your family says something truly great about you. It's also touching to see how quickly you're becoming a part of my family. You fit right into my extended family as you run around with me and my cousins. The same goes for my parents and brother, easily slipping into conversations about school, sports, and more. Most importantly, you see how important my family is to me, so it is something important to you.

8. You're incredibly supportive.

Maddie Robinson

I never need to ask you to come to a recital or performance. I know you'll always be there in the audience to encourage me. You even come to recitals I'm not in as an audience member with me to keep me company. Whether I'm on or off stage, I never feel alone.

9. You make me feel less anxious.

Maddie Robinson

Since the beginning of our relationship, you've been one of the only people who always makes me feel calm and safe. I know anytime I feel panicked or upset I can come to you, and you will help me as much as you can to feel more like myself.

10. You take care of me.

Maddie Robinson

When I'm sick, your first instinct is to come take care of me. You make me meals, rub my head when I have a headache, and pick up medicine when I need it, going above and beyond to make me feel better. I know if I need you, you'll stay with me for as long as I need until I feel better.

11. Together, we make a great team.

Maddie Robinson

I know no matter what, we can get through anything, because we love and support each other. Whatever the challenge, I know you have my back, and I hope you know I've got yours.

No words will ever quite be able to say exactly how I feel about you, but I want you to know I love and appreciate having you in my life. Thank you, Tristen, for being loving, kind, and most importantly, yourself. Happy Valentine's Day, love.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
