The anti-vaccine community is a small community, yet the numbers are rising. However, when speaking with anti-vaxxers about the cause, they seem to always come up, the first argument being that vaccines cause autism.
Andrew Jeremy Wakefield was a gastroenterologist in the late 1900's, who claimed that the MMR vaccine that is used for Rubella, Mumps, and the Measles caused autism and bowel disease. His medical license was later revoked for "unethical behavior and other misconducts", probably because he caused a worldwide panic.
There have been 30+ years of evidence against this theory since then. There hasn't been one scientist that could replicate Wakefield's "evidence". Even IFthis argument were true, I'd much rather have a child who is autistic versus a child who is dead because I was closedminded.
Another argument I've heard is "it's no one else's business if I vaccinate". Yes, Ma'am. It is. Vaccinations protect the community as a whole. Studies show that when the majority of the population is vaccinated, it prevents outbreaks. Some people, like transplant recipients and chemotherapy patients, cannot receive certain vaccines.
Organdonor.gov reports that 116.000+ people receive transplants each year. The Center for Disease Control reports that at least 650,000 receive chemotherapy each year. That is 766,000 that we need to help protect.
In an article for Time Magazine in March of 2014, there were 19 reported cases of Measles in New York, even though it was wiped out in 2000. Jason McDonald, as a spokesperson for the CDC, even said, "If you are unvaccinated and you come into contact with Measles, there is a 90% chance that you will contract it."
The final argument is that "vaccines contain dangerous substance s". Meanwhile, 68 million people still eat at McDonald's yearly, but whatever. This argument is not completely wrong. However, the ingredients are safe in small doses.
Studies show that children come across more aluminum in breast milk and formula. Kids are also exposed to more toxins and bacteria just from going outside and playing. All vaccines are required by the CDC to have at least 10 years before being licensed. Shots like the measles shots or the meningococcal vaccine are as little as 0.5mL. That is not nearly enough to contain a significant amount of aluminum, formaldehyde, thimerosal, or anything else that everyone suddenly cares about.
