Going on vacation is an exciting part of summer break. Although necessary, it can be expensive. According to American Express, the average person spends around $1,145 on summer vacation. Before you go on your trip, think about ways you can save money. You can control what you spend before you go by keeping these things in mind.

1. Have a budget

Think of how much you want to spend overall. This includes gifts, food, drinks and activities. Give yourself a limit and keep it in cash to help yourself keep track.

2. Watch the shopping

It's tempting to buy a lot of new things before a trip. Don't let the excitement of this new experience make forget the things you have in your wardrobe. Mix and match a few pieces for a brand new look/ .

3. Plan transportation

When you get to your destination, think of how you'll get around. Look into the city's public transportation if it's safe. Try to get an Uber with a group to split cost. Weigh your options to see what will guarantee the most savings .

4. Unexpected fees

Want a glass of wine at dinner on a cruise ship? That'll be a $15 fee. Don't forget the tip for your server and valet attendant. Make sure you read the details before your trip and plan for extra/emergency money in your initial budget. Yes, wine is an emergency.

5. The tourist experiences cost extra

Thinking about doing the shark excursion or going to that fancy sky bar? These are added expenses on your trip. Enjoy going on your vacation without adding too many tourist money traps. It'll save you more in the end.

Having a limit you're not willing to go over can only help in the end. Have an accountability partner on the trip and share your budget with them. You can have fun and not be broke when you return. Have a relaxing vacation and a strong money plan.
