While he may be the most successful U.S. athlete of all time, Michael Phelps will probably get blown out of the water this year.

U.S. gymnast Simone Biles is making her Olympic debut in the Rio Olympic Games. The gymnast, who is an adopted child, has won the World Championships three years in a row! She has won a record-breaking 10 gold medals throughout her career.

Former Olympic All-Around athletes, Carly Patterson, Nastia Lukin and Gabby Douglas were all talented athletes, but they were not unusually dominant. Biles is.

Her dominance in competition is such that she’s pretty much always ahead. The only unknown is who is going to finish second and third. This dominance might make the sport less appealing. After all, who likes to see the same athlete/team win again and again? (i.e. Uconn Women)

But Biles has such a mastery of her sport that’s it is a joy to watch her compete. It’s like the pull of watching Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. People loved watching them because of their sheer awesomeness. It’s the same with Biles.

Biles is on pace to become the first Olympic gymnast to take home five gold medals. Biles is pretty much guaranteed the All-Around event barring a meltdown more epic than Jordan Spieth’s at the 2016 Masters. The extreme difficulty of most of her events gives her a razor edge over her opponents. What helps even more is the lethal dexterity with which she completes most of her events. If she’s on edge — which is pretty much all the time — she’s unbeatable.

The U.S. will also probably win the Team Gold. They have strong competitors for all four events. Marta Karolyi and company made sure to have all four events — vault, beam, uneven bars and floor exercise — covered. Russia's team could certainly make a run for the gold but, well, they don’t have Biles!

Biles could also qualify for the individual events. She’s excellent on vault, beam and floor. She is solid on the uneven bars, but that is very much a “specialist” event. The U.S. alone has one specialist, Madison Kocian, on the team for the sole purpose of competing on the uneven bars. Russia is also usually especially adroit on the uneven bars.

Oh, well. Biles will have to settle for five measly gold medals!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
