During the gold medal game at the 2018 Winter Olympics, the long, hard, and winded rivalry between USA and Canada's women's hockey teams was brought back, and it was a battle to watch. Normally, in the Canadian vs. USA women's hockey games, it's a very tight battle, leaving each team with minimal points, and, generally, a tie that sends the two into overtime. Often times, neither teams would score during overtime, which would send the two teams into a shootout. In the past, the Canadians have won during either overtime or the shootout; that was how the game in the 2014 Winter Olympics ended.
However, this game ended much more satisfyingly for the US team. We won our first gold medal in 20 years, against our biggest rival.
This game was exactly how I had envisioned it. It was everything I had hoped to happen. It was, truly, a dream come true, and I couldn't be any prouder of how the ladies played.
This game represented everything that the ladies are; strong, determined, motivated, and, most importantly, capable. As a spectator of these ladies in the seasons between the Olympics, I have seen the team grow and accomplish so much, and I know that this game is something that meant so much to them. It's been a long, hard journey, but they finally accomplished what they had been working so long and hard for.
The US women's team is truly astounding, and I am not surprised that they were able to beat Canada. At the world championships in 2017, the US women were boycotting, and were not going to play unless there was a change within USA hockey to bring equality between the resources boys and girls had. The women won, within a few days of the world championships, and showed up and ended up winning. This was an incredible moment; the team was hardly prepared to play, and beat every single team that had continuously been working and training to play.
Every win has also been very humble. The women are extremely classy in interviews, and always speak about how it was such an incredible experience, and they were grateful to be out there, and grateful to win. Though you can see stress and despair sometimes throughout games, especially when facing a loss, the women always bring it back and show humbleness and gratefulness.
These women are not only incredible athletes on the ice, but also off, and I could not be any prouder of their win. This was a long time coming, and they were so deserving.
