In an unprecedented move, Ambassador Nikki Haley revealed Tuesday that the U.S. has withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council. Haley claims that this decision is due in part to the council's supposed bias against Israel, a U.S. ally. Haley also claims that, "the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias."
While this decision has been a looming threat over the past few months, the official announcement of withdrawal comes just a day after the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights condemned the Trump administration's policy to separate children and parent at the U.S.-Mexico border.
So far, many human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, have strongly opposed this decision, adding that although it is imperfect, the Human Rights Council is still "an important force for accountability and justice."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has praised this decision, echoing Haley's sentiments that the organization has long been hostile and anti-Israeli. Of course, the bias both Netanyahu and Haley are referring to is the Council's reactions to alleged Israeli government abuses of Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank.
