The Pros and Cons to Dog Sitting

There are definitely more ups than there are downs!

The Pros and Cons to Dog Sitting
Samantha Pointon

By now it's probably clear that I'm a huge dog lover. Well I mean animal lover in general, but dogs hold a special spot in my heart. I have three dogs that I love, and they are all perfect lovable little creatures. Almost everyone in my family, and in my circle of close friends, have dogs, so I'm literally surrounded by dogs no matter where I go. One dog that I particularly love is Bella. She's an older Weimaraner that I dog sit for frequently. Speaking of dog sitting, that's what I came here today to talk to all of you about. I've been dog sitting for Bella for a couple of years now, and I've noticed a few things about dog sitting in someone else's home that are pros and a few that are cons.

I guess I'll start off by talking about the cons because who wants to end something on a down note. With dog sitting Bella, I have to stay overnight with her in her house because she doesn't feel comfortable in other people's houses. and she can't be left alone over night. The first con about dog sitting I would say is sleeping in someone's house and feeling uncomfortable in a way. You know the feeling when you sleep in a strange place. You miss your own bed. Well that's exactly what it's like when you have to dog sit and spend the night at their house.

Another con is not being used to the creaks and noises that houses make normally. You know when you're in your own home, you're used to the sounds that happen randomly because you've lived in the house, and you can either explain what the noise is or just go with the flow because you expect the noises to happen. Yet, when you're sleeping in another house for the first time, every little noise is like the worst thing to happen because you don't know if its a noise that normally happens or if its something else. It definitely keeps you on your toes.

Those are really the only two cons I have to dog sitting, at least the only two that I can think of right now. There are, however, plenty of pros to dog sitting, and I could go on forever about them but I'll pick only a few for right now. The first pro about dog sitting is in the title. I get to spend time with the dog, or as I like to call every dog I meet a puppy, because no matter how old a dog is they are always going to be considered a puppy to me. Dogs don't come with drama, and they are very good listeners. I mean, I hope they are listening and not just looking at me to give them a treat but either way.

The next pro would be that the dog will generally treat you like their owner in a little sense, meaning that they will protect you from every little noise that happens outside. "Oh the mailman just drove by, let me bark and make a lot of noise so they don't come in here and hurt her." It's adorable to see Bella bark at every little thing that happens, but I know deep down that she's just doing it to protect me and I'm ok with that.

The last pro I will talk about is cuddling. Bella is such a sweetheart, and all she really wants to do is eat, play outside for a little bit and snuggle. It doesn't take much to please her. She will literally jump up on the couch next to me and lay her head on my lap. It doesn't really matter if I'm doing anything or not. She wants to cuddle, and she is going to tell you so. She also will jump up next to you when you're getting ready to go to sleep and either push you off the couch or lay right on top of you. She just wants cuddles, and it's really hard to get mad at her for it. I'm sure she's not the only dog that likes to do this either, so that's why I put it as a pro on this list.

Again, I could go on and on about dog sitting, but I think I've given you plenty to go off of here, and if the opportunity comes up for you to dog sit, I would say take it. You get to spend time with puppies, and besides it's really easy money.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
