Donald Trump has officially, and I mean OFFICIALLY, lost the 2020 election. With the Capitol Building raid, Congress was pushing for the 25th amendment. Vice President Mike Pence is the only person allowed to enforce the 25th amendment to remove the current president out of office. Instead, Pence decided against it and allowed Trump to remain in office. On Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, The House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for a second time with a vote of 232 votes. Donald Trump is the first president in United States history to be impeached twice.
But why impeach him now, right before he's about to leave office?
The House has played a rather powerful political move on Donald Trump. This second impeachment was not to remove him from office but to prevent him from becoming a politician again. Congress was able to pull this off because the House is led by Democrats. And with the raid, they were able to gain ten extra votes from the Republicans to impeach Trump.
The House approved only one article of impeachment. This article is what prevents him from taking a governmental, leadership role but keeps him in office until January 20th.
So, what happens now?
The Senate needs to vote on impeaching Trump. With two newly elected Democratic senators from Georgia, the Senate is officially run by Democrats, as well. There is a high chance that the Senate will approve the same impeachment article that Congress has sent them.
For now, though, we just wait.
