The Criterion Collection is a DVD and Blu-ray distribution company dedicated to releasing important classic and contemporary films in the highest quality possible. Each release comes with exclusive bonus features to supplement the release, as well as unique packaging and pamphlets for each film. Every month, new films are added to the Criterion Collection's already vast selection. Here are a few of the most exciting upcoming releases.
"Boyhood"
Richard Linklater's hugely ambitious film "Boyhood" is one of many masterpieces coming to the Criterion Collection this fall. "Boyhood" follows the life of Mason, a boy from Texas, as he grows and changes throughout his adolescence. Starting at age 6 and following him until age 18, the movie was actually filmed over a period of 12 years using the same cast and crew. "Boyhood" comes to the Criterion Collection on October 11th.
"Punch-Drunk Love"
Paul Thomas Anderson is not a name anyone would associate with Adam Sandler—that is, at least not until 2002 with the release of "Punch-Drunk Love." Also starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Emily Watson, the film follows Sandler (in his first dramatic role) as Barry, a man with a temper who falls for a woman while simultaneously getting caught up in some trouble with a deranged man he owes money to. The Criterion edition of Paul Thomas Anderson's one-of-a-kind comedy will be released on November 15th.
"The Squid and the Whale"
Before there was "Frances Ha" or "While We're Young," there was "The Squid and the Whale," writer/director Noah Baumbach's honest portrayal of what divorce is like in a small family of four living in 1980s New York. Starring Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg, and Owen Kline, the film feels heartfelt as well as funny and personal. The film's Criterion edition will be released on November 22nd.
