Lately, it seems like the ocean has become a scary place. You're probably thinking, "Well hasn't it always been kind of scary? With all the unknown and stuff?" To answer your question; yes, it has, but the number of disappearances and discoveries that have occurred in the past two years is pretty frightening. Missing people, missing planes, hidden submarines filled with narcotics; the ocean is huge and there are many parts of it that we haven't discovered so who knows what happens over there. Not us.
There are also many discoveries and disappearances that we don't even hear about, but here are four that you have heard of:
1. In recent news, the U.S. Coast Guard discovered a homemade submarine that was filled with $181 million worth of cocaine.
That's 6 tons of coco and 12,000 pounds! It was spotted by a U.S. Navy aircraft in the eastern Pacific Ocean last month, which then called the USCG into action. This bust happened 200 miles south of Mexico and it was reported that four men were taken into custody.
I mean, props to them for making a homemade submarine -- that's pretty dope. As for carrying the 6 tons of drugs...no props. No props at all.
2. A couple weeks ago, two boys went missing after they told their parents they were going on a fishing trip alone.
Their boat was found capsized and missing two life jackets. Their parents believe they are still lost at sea and even expressed how well trained they were with sailing and operating the boat. On Aug. 7, 2015, two life jackets were found nearby where the capsized boat was discovered. These life jackets are believed to be the two missing ones from the boat. So the question still stands: where are Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos and are they alive?
3. On Aug. 2, the World's greatest freediver, Natalia Molchanova, went recreationally free diving off the coast of Spain and is feared to be dead because she never resurfaced.
Her peers noticed her disappearance after she strayed away from them. The decorated Russian champion was reported to be diving without fins in around 30 to 40 meters (98 to 132 feet) of water and supposedly got swept into a strong underwater current. Most of her family and friends have accepted the fact that she is dead and started mourning the loss of her.
Her 28-year-old son, Alexey Molchanova, was also a champion free diver and told The New York Times, "It seems she'll stay in the sea. I think she would like that." The search is still ongoing for the diver.
4. Without a doubt, the number one mystery we are still trying to uncover is the disappearance of Flight MH370.
There have been so many theories on what could have happened with this plane and all 227 passengers and 12 crew members. The plane disappeared on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport. The flight last made contact at 1:19 Malaysia time on March 7 when it was over the South China Sea. When the plane never managed to get to its destination on time, that's when the panic began to set in. On July 26, the first sign of debris was found from the plane, but that's the only real set of evidence we have for now.
Flight MH370 is considered the greatest aviation mystery of all time. Many channels and directors have created documentaries about the plane and the passengers on it. What went wrong? Where is it?
So, with that being said, the ocean is without a doubt one of the biggest mysteries in this world. Things get lost or found in there and it becomes the scariest thing man doesn't know. Therefore, I ask you this one question...
Are you scared yet?
