These Are The Benefits Of Unplugging For A Weekend

Once a month, I unplug from social media.

Social media has became a huge part of today's society. It impacts what others do subconsciously throughout the day. Being that I am a communications major, social media can sometimes consume my whole day. I have begun at least taking one weekend out the month to unplug and refocus myself.

During my social media shut down, I take that time I would usually spend on social media to do other things alone. Social media has a way of making society compare themselves to the influencers that we see. People do not show their lows, they only portray the life they want to live or only the good things that happen to them.

Social media can taint how people perceive themselves. My secluded weekend helps me refocus on the reality of life. I take time to look at myself in the mirror and not compare myself to the women on the internet. As I look back at myself, I recognize my beauty, I see the uniqueness within myself.

I make sure to take a bath with bubbles, while listening to my favorite podcast. All while doing my favorite face mask, and I take extra time to wash and deep condition my hair. I do these things to make myself feel good and relax. This helps me take the time I devote to social media, and focus on myself.

While unplugged from social media, I also complete a task that I have been neglecting. Sometimes it's reorganizing my closet because it gives me a sense of organization in my life. I take time to plan and create a budget for the following month. I usually will call a friend I haven't spoken to in a while to catch up and see how they are. This weekend once a month, allows me to prioritize and regain focus.

Unplugging from social media gives me time to breathe. It has allowed me to get in tune with my own mind, body, and soul. When I first began removing myself from social media, I was bored and ultimately just eager to see what everyone was doing and posting. However now, I look forward to my weekends away from social media. This strategy has made me appreciate who I am and how I look, as well as, made me productive.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
