We are in the midst of the longest government shutdown we have ever had in America. Over 800,000 government workers are affected by this partial shutdown. This includes the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and so many other government entities. The employees that are not furloughed are still working but not receiving compensation. Thank you to the employees serving their countries in this hard time.

Approximately 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. While this unfortunate, it is hard to imagine government workers continue to work for no pay and are unable to provide for their families. The lucky ones that have savings are probably starting to feel them deplete. Having over a month of no pay will be hard on anyone's savings account. These Americans that are tirelessly serving their country have bills, families, medical expenses and other things on their backs they are responsible for. Yes, they will be compensated after the shutdown for their work; this does not mean they are not struggling right now. For their relentless effort, they deserve our highest praise.

Thank you to the Americans that are continuing to keep us safe, ensure that we live a comfortable life, and keep various services open despite the lack of pay. I know that this shutdown is extremely frustrating, more so to them than the average American. But they fight the pain and hardship this is bringing in order to serve us.

They have a government job to fulfill their goals and ensure a level of financial stability for their everyday life and that is not the case now. Nobody gets a job thinking "wow, I do not want to be paid for all my effort for over a month." This is happening while our senators, representatives, and the president are being paid their six-figure salary for the political war they are at, many American's are not being paid for their work. Many will be compensated but there are some that expect to receive no pay at all for their effort. School cafeteria workers, as well as other janitors, are not expecting to be compensated at all for the work they completed during the shutdown. Thank you for those going through this and working as hard as ever.

With America in political unrest due to the government shutdown, the least we can do is thank those who are continuing to make strides in their field without the proper reparation they deserve. It does not matter if you are republicans or democrats. If you can understand what is going on with the partial shutdown, you can understand the injustice of these workers in the firing line. Take the time to thank government workers for what they do. It does not matter if they work for the FBI or for the school system, they all have taken a roll in ensuring America is a great nation to live in. Thank them while you have the chance.

It is that time of year again. Christmastime. It is one of my favorite seasons for a myriad of reasons. Here are just a few reasons why I love Christmas. This list is in no order of importance.

1. The Christmas decorations

I am that person who will decorate directly after Thanksgiving is over. This year, my roommates and I put the tree up in our apartment before we even left for Thanksgiving break. It is a great stress reliever for me to just sit in my living room and work on the huge amount of work I have before the semester is over.

Mistakes are something we all make, no matter how old we get. Most of the time, the mistakes we made are little and sometimes due to something out of our control. Yet, there are mistakes that are bigger than others. Personally, I have mistakes that I wish I could go back and undo. Here they are:

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?
