The Often Unnoticed Impact Of Music

In my opinion, music is one of the most efficient and easiest ways to influence a multitude of people. Although we might not always realize it, some of our favorite songs have inspiring lyrics that we sing along to, making a statement with our voices.

Powerful songs like Black Eyed Pea’s “Where is the Love” invites everyone to join together and belt out the lyrics as one. Comparatively, music has the ability to transport you back in the future, helping you remember some of your favorite memories. It has the ability to inspire, often giving us the ambitious push that we sometimes lack. Music, in all of its forms, is one of the easiest and unnoticed forms of influence and inspiration.

Think of all of the songs that we hear and never notice. Background music at restaurants, calming music in elevators and effective music in movies. We don’t notice how often we are being influenced by music. Very rarely are we experiencing a completely silent life and for that I am personally grateful.

Imagine watching your favorite horror movie without the music to back it up. Would those horrifying scenes be as intense?

What comes to mind for me is the classic, “Tip Toe Through the Tulips.” I don’t know about you all, but that song still gets me locking my doors and triple checking them.

How about sad movies? We all cried during The Fault in Our Stars when M83’s song “Wait” played. And if you say you didn’t cry, you are simply lying.

My point is that music influences us beyond our conscious comprehension. It enhances our sadness, intensifies our fear and motivates us during moments of empowerment. There is a reason that we obsess over music, because how could we possibly live without it?

There is a reason that we all have our favorite artists and love our precious Spotify playlists. Music is timeless and has the ability to influence indefinitely and there’s something magically powerful in that.

You can’t tell me when you are at a concert, surrounded by your very best friends while seeing your favorite band, you don’t get chills. You can’t tell me that that feeling of absolute perfection and awe isn’t addictive.

Most importantly, you can’t tell me that in those pure moments that we take for granted, you don’t feel inspired. Inspired not to be a famous musician, but to see, hear and feel the underlying beauty in music and the world. Music is powerful and it deserves more credit than it is given.

Admire the creativity of music: the ability to create lyrics that hit harder than an actual train alongside the beat that gets us dancing and the rhythm that moves our souls. Now, with all of this in mind, put on Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” and run inspiringly wild.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
