UNLV Rebel football has a lot to be proud of this week, as they dominated Idaho State on Saturday night with an 80-8 win. As we all know, the Rebels didn't have ideal season starters, but they weren't complete wipeouts compared to last year season. This season, UNLV made a lot of changes. Primarily, Tony Sanchez was hired last year as the Rebels' head coach.
This year, despite new coaching, the Rebels did not come out as strong as many of us have believed they would, coming in with a 0-3 loss to start off the season. Saturday night, the Rebels were desperately looking for a win before their matchup against University of Nevada, Reno. Luckily, that win came as they matched up against Idaho State. They were also able to break a few records along the way.
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the Rebels broke a series of records during the game. These include most touchdowns in a game (Mountain West Conference), as well as having 35 points in the first quarter of the game -- breaking the previous record of 33 points in the fourth quarter against Caltech (additional records can be found in the link below).
While everybody is excited for the win alongside their records, Coach Sanchez differs in opinion. Even though he is happy about the win that ended the Rebels' losing streak, he’s much more humble. Rather, Sanchez is already focusing on the next game at hand, as he said the following at the press conference:
"Really, at the end of the day, I wish we wouldn't have gotten there [to 80 points]," Sanchez said. "We played well. The biggest thing is we won the game. I don't care if we won by one. I don't care if we won by 50. For as long as I'm here, and I hope to God that's a long, long time, we want to win by one single point, and I don't care who we're playing," (Las Vegas Review Journal).
Even though the Sanchez and the Rebels have had a rough season opener, it’s looking good for them down the road for the next few games, as they will be going up against Reno, San Jose State, and Fresno State in the coming weeks. With the momentum they just built up in the last game, we can only hope that it will continue into these next few games.
Here’s to wishing Coach Sanchez and the rest of the Rebels football team good luck for the rest of the season. Go Rebs!
