Sometimes All You Can Do Is Live For The Unknown

It’s impossible to predict the future.

Sometimes All You Can Do Is Live For The Unknown
Suzi Marshall

Life is a funny thing. It has a way of jumping out at you at random times to remind you that you’re living it. You get on a streak of a bunch of good things happening and then, BOOM! There’s life’s right hook to your chin. It’s not always bad. Sometimes that haymaker knocks some cold, hard sense back into you. Sometimes, life is gentler, it’ll wrap you up in a fuzzy blanket like your mother tucking you in before bed. No matter what, though, life is always unknown.

We all wake up every day with the possibility that this could be our last day, yet we roll out of bed each one of those days and begin our daily routine. Every day is never exactly the same, though. Some days there are small variations like brushing your teeth after you shower or brushing them in the shower for you go-getters out there. Occasionally, the variations are larger like waking up on moving day or a holiday and every once in a blue moon, you have a day that changes your life forever.

These days are ones that you never forget. Their images are etched into your mind as permanent reminders of what happened to you. The experiences are woven into the fabric of your being and become as much a part of you as your eyes or your ears. There are some good experiences and some bad ones, too. The contents of these memories help define the person you will become in your future. The amazing and scary part about it though, is that we never know when these days will show up.

We think we have an indication at times that one of these days are upon us. Maybe a big opportunity drops on your doorstep. You get a call from a job you’ve always wanted or a date with the most incredible girl you’ve ever met. We think these will both be the blue moon days but then they turn out to be just a larger variation on a regular day.

At least, that’s how it seems.

But you never really know, right? It’s impossible to predict the future. That’s how the saying goes.

People tend to be scared of the unknown. Maybe it’s our pessimistic outlook we take too often that causes us to fear what we don’t understand or know. However, fear is only one emotion that we can choose to embrace. We don’t know what is in store — so choosing to feel joy, or hope, or love, or happiness are all viable alternatives to letting fear control us. Just because one opportunity seems to disappear, doesn’t mean it will be gone forever or a better one won’t take its place.

Life is unknown. And because of that, you should enjoy it as such. Take every situation on its own. Think about the future… but don’t worry about it. Embrace the unknown for what it is worth. Who knows, maybe that incredible girl will read this and smile knowing you’re thinking of her.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
