There are articles all over the internet about advice to incoming freshman which is great. Freshman (speaking from the perspective of recently having been a freshman) have a lot coming for them, most of which, no matter how prepared a person's, will hit you like a dump truck. Personally I feel like I had a mob of angry dump trucks who were out to get me at some points during my freshman year but I got out, survived and moved on from freshman year.

So here I am packing for sophomore year. Now where are the advice articles for sophomores? Does everyone think that just because we have a year under our belts that we have it all figured out? Granted we do have a lot of it figured out. We know where things are on campus, we know what food in the cafeteria is good and what food to avoid at all costs. We know how to navigate the weight room, athletic training room and locker rooms and for the most part we have the whole living in the dorm thing figured out. It may seem like we should be good on our own and maybe most people are. Yay good for you! But I am probably not the only person who feels a little unsure about her second year of college.

In college athletics, there is an experience called the sophomore slump. Which, without having yet experienced it sounds like complacency, frustration, and feeling without fulfillment of entitlement. Well how is this supposed to be avoided? Does it happen in school as well? What else changes from freshman year to sophomore year that nobody tells you? Is it still ok if I bring my fish Kevin? Cuz he’s pretty cool and I like him. Is it going to be less exciting to come back to campus? Will it lose it’s sense of new and exciting and a fresh start? Well I guess I will just have to go and find out.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
