My roommate and I like to joke that we cheated the college system because we were already best friends before rooming together. Now, I’m not advocating choosing your college based on where your best friend goes. There are so many other things that should go into that decision, and there are a lot of benefits to going your own route. But, if you and your best friend are in sync and down to your dream school, there are definitely some perks.
1. Undressing in the room is never weird.
I'd imagine that with most roommates, there’s an awkward “are we good enough friends for me to change clothes in front of you yet?” stage. But when you’ve been friends for years, it’s never an issue. No pants? No problem!
2. Your tiny dorm closet doubles in size.
“Hey, I’m borrowing your sweater!” I say when I see her halfway through the day, wearing her sweater.
3. You don’t have to deal with that awkward website for trying to find a roommate.
Um, are you sure this isn't a dating website?
4. You make double the friends.
There are no “her” friends or “my” friends, they’re OUR friends. We’re a package deal, and everyone knows it.
5. You always have someone to reminisce about the good times of back home with.
I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve gone off on a “Hey, remember that one time in high school…” story at dinner since being in college and left everyone at the table super confused.
6. You get double the motherly love.
Shout out to my second momma for including me in all of the care packages and pick-me-up texts!
7. And in your mom’s absence, you keep each other in line.
Well, at least we try to.
8. Your room is a judgement-free zone.
Crawling into bed to watch Netflix and eat Nutella from the jar on a Friday night? Make room for me!
9. You always have a road trip buddy for going home.
Sing alongs are a necessity.
10. You have the cutest coordinating dorm decorations.
We've been preparing our Pinterest boards since the beginning of senior year.
11. You experience new “firsts” together.
All of the scary firsts that come with college, like navigating the grocery store, are more fun with your bestie by your side.
12. You get to make four more years of memories together.
Thank you for being the O to my K, the salted caramel to my mocha, the Ann to my Leslie, the candy to my corn. Thank you for all of the adventures, late night venting sessions, and for loving me even at my worst. I can't imagine sharing my college years with anyone else.
