Orlando is not the only place that will be robbed of its glee and spirit if we continue to put ourselves at odds with one another. We must not ruin our foundation in desire for peace.
There is a need to mourn; remember those lost and love those who are hurting. However, there comes a point when we need to take legislative initiative and action. The picture becomes foggier when it needs an answer, but it should not separate us. It should bring us together. If the people who have almost lost their lives to terrorism are still smiling and searching for joy, then so should everyone else.
People who are responsible for making decisions should not be looking for reasons to be against each other. We need to regain peace in our country, and that should be an ideal shared between us all.
Some people are reaching for gun laws as the answer to the terrorist attack in Orlando. They're looking at the circumstances and saying a suspected terrorist, who was being investigated by the FBI, was allowed to purchase a gun on our land to attack our country. They believe that if legislation had been passed beforehand, as advocated, Orlando would not have had one of the largest mass shootings in the United States.
The opposing opinion is that if there are more restrictions on buying guns, then our whole country will be wiped of its freedom. They believe that they should be able to defend themselves. Their case can be made by the fact that it took three hours for the police to arrive and do anything.
The problem with these answers is the fact that neither of them deal with the mind of this terrorist. They both have integral points that need to be the topic of conversation, such as the point of safety and responsiveness, but this doesn't change the fact that this terrorist wanted to end his life. It's not about the weapon, it's about his mind. I think our country should agree that there is a need to keep people safe from people with this mindset. We need to keep terrorists away from weapons, and the innocent people need to be able to defend themselves from this type of evil. This common belief should unite us all.
What have we been taught since we were children? We've been taught that good triumphs over evil and that's why it hurts so bad when we don't see this philosophy work out in real life. But, what did the good people do to stop evil? They stuck together. They coincided and brainstormed. It's more important to come together and value looking for a common answer that will achieve success, than to divert our energy into pushing ourselves against each other.
At this moment, we need superheroes. If we proceed to internally fight, so much so that we forget the real issue, then our country will be at sacrifice. We know that in the end we all want peace so we have to see from that common angle.
Nothing is getting done because we are only focusing on our differences. The harder our country makes it to work together, the more impossible it will be to do anything good. We need to care about the well being of our country and come together in this crisis.
It isn't logical to fight over a fight. We have to make moves when the opposition makes a move. We need sane people with good hearts, morale and principle to be on our team for the sake and sanity of our nation.
