As it was pointed out in this recent "Washington Examiner" article, the U.S. Census found that the non-Hispanic population of the United States will cease to be the majority by 2044. However, our vice-president, Joe Biden, found it more fitting to mention at a State Department luncheon that this will happen in 2017 while stating, "that's a good thing."

Why is it that a nation's vice-president judges his country's citizens by the color of their skin? Have we not gone over this time and time again throughout history? (Hint: Martin Luther King) It is moronic to assume that the United States will be better off with more people of Hispanic descent than European, due to the fact that skin color says nothing about a person's contribution to society. I am not saying white people are better than Hispanics; that would be extremely ignorant of me. Much like King said, people should be judged based on the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin. And this general idea should be applied to our country's outlook and the reasoning about whom to let into this country.

Immigration has been and always should be about improving America and her values, accepting her culture, and contributing to society, not increasing the number of people of a certain skin color. Should immigrants be looked at as people who are deserving of life in America and will contribute to the American culture by embracing it, or should they be embraced because they are just another number in a demographics study? The former is the obvious answer, though Biden favors the latter.

The government and its leaders should not be in the business of celebrating the diminishing numbers of a certain race through immigration. Rather, they need to be concerned about ensuring the success of immigrants through assimilation. Nowadays, we have Joe Biden and others shouting for joy, saying, "Look how strong we are because of all the different cultures and skins colors in our country! We're not all white!" The duty of government, I believe, was perfectly summed up by Mark Levin in his NY Times best-seller "Liberty and Tyranny": "The government, therefore, is not only justified but obligated to qualify immigration to those most likely to contribute to the well-being of the civil society, and to create conditions in which aliens of differing backgrounds can be absorbed into the American culture."

This is the only way to ensure the strength and livelihood of this nation. Increasing the diversity of skin colors alone is a narrow-minded way to define the success of America. We must always remember that this country is a melting pot, not a mixed salad. We must have a common American culture that helps grow this country in a way the world has never seen before. By no means does this infer that there cannot or should not be sub-cultures. However, no great nation has ever thrived without a common culture, language and ideals.

In order to overcome the many obstacles we face in America, we must remain united. While many of our American leaders define and divide us by race, it is imperative that we remember we are Americans first. United we stand, divided we fall.
