Let me start by saying this-no this is not one of those articles about why men and women should get paid the same amount of money. One day this will happen and I will wait for that day.
This article pertains to when we are not doing anything wrong or we are the victims of a crime-we seem to turn into the criminal just because we are not a man.
Am I saying this happens all the time? Not at all. If you follow soccer like my family does, Hope Solo got terminated because of the words she used against Sweden after their shut out loss in the Olympics. She got what she deserved due to what was going on before this incident and things leading up to this incident. I wanted to make that very clear because I do not want to come off saying we are 100% perfect.
Now when it comes to men and consequences, it feels as though they are just getting a slap on the wrist or just a pat on the back because they got caught. They get statements like "oh he is just a child" or "oh he did not know what he was doing" or "she was antagonizing him with her provocative clothing." None of those say he should be taking the full consequence that fits their actions. The judge or prosecutor seems him as a golden child who should not have to go to jail because it will "harm his career" or jail would break them mentally.
We want to talk about being mentally broken? Talk to the girl who wanted to party and woke up with a man on top of her bumping her without her permission. Lets talk about how since the "golden child" is not kicked off of school, she has to remember that moment every time she sees him and remembers that he just walked.
We want to talk about careers being ruined? She cannot even think straight because this moment will haunt her every moment. Lets not even talk about if a child was produced while this encounter was going on. What will she have to do than? Oh wait I know your exact response to her: "Well you should have kept your legs closed."
Her legs closed? What about his wiener!? What if she was unconscious and did not even know what was going on? What if she was roofed by the attacker? Will you still tell her the exact same statement? Will you even tell the golden child to keep it in their pants? Will you tell them to not take an answer from someone who is intoxicated or drugged?
Oh wait again you will tell the girl "Well you shouldn't have been drinking so much alcohol that night. Maybe you should have never taken that drink from them." Fine fine. That is understandable because we should know how much to drink so we can still get home or have a plan to get home.
How about teachers and younger students who are being sent home or criticized about their outfit. Were they showing off any skin. breast, or anything that would make the male students or teachers "uncomfortable?" The kids are sent home even though the parents looked at the school code requirements for clothes and still women are sent home more than men with baggy pants. The teacher repeatedly yells at the guys to fix their outfits and when they kind of fix it, they let it go. Girls are sent straight to the nurses office for baggy pants or shirts to cover up their body.
Society is sending a message to women that is not okay. We need to stop this message now or else we are going backwards instead of forward.
