Some people are lucky enough to land an awesome gig straight out of college, but for many, it ain't easy. Granted, when I got out of college, I did not start my career hunt, instead, I went on a five and a half month road trip across the country with my boyfriend's band. I would not trade that time for anything, but ever since I got back, life has been hard. My laundry list of bills makes it so I literally have pennies after all the bills are paid.
It has been about a year since I've been on the job hunt. I have had about 10 interviews with reputable agencies and companies, about 20 phone interviews, and lots of denial emails. I have spent days on Indeed.com, LinkedIn, Idealist, Craigslist, etc. I have been on the brink of insanity on many days. It is very soul-crushing to do every day; it is hard not to give up. I find solace in dancing to '60s and '70s music, yoga, walking/running in the park, and red wine.
Every good job seems like you have to have 3-5 years of experience. The city I'm now is small and competition is high. My hope now is when I move to my next destination, being a bigger city, that I'll have more luck and opportunities.
My advice is, go to a big city as soon as you can. Don't play the game of trying for months getting a job in a city with limited opportunities. It is not worth it. You are young, you have skills and potential, the world is at your fingertips! And you don't have to do what you majored in. I was an advertising major and now I'm an aspiring writer.
It is tough at times, but do not ever give up!
