There are deep roots in the why!

Understanding the Why, Part 1

What motivates a person to do what he or she does? Why do people live the way that they live? Why do people live criminal lifestyles? Why do people have certain personalities? Why do people attend church? Why do people attend school? Why should a person join odyssey? These questions seem to be very simple, but there's greater quality in the why. I'm going to tell you now that almost 100% of the decisions that I make or the way I live is because of God. Not that I said "almost 100 %." There are still some things that are both being taken away and added to my life. If you would just take a moment to think about everything that you do on a daily basis and then ask why do you do them. You may come up with good and silly reasons. This may cause you to make some life changes. I'm going to get very personal about the "whys" in my own life and some of you may be able to relate. These are the following whys in my life:

1. Why do I attend school? Well, i'm attending school so that I could earn a degree. I'm a first generation college student and I grew up in poverty. I got tired of being broke, therefore I decided to further my education.

2. Why am I studying Sociology, Psychology, and Theology? I was sitting in a job corps classroom during the Spring of 2013 and I the Lord placed Sociology and Psychology on my heart. I want to be able to help people to the fullness of my potential, so I'm also pursuing a degree in the field of Biblical Studies(Theology). I know that God is going to use me in numerous ways.

3. Why am I a member of odyssey? I've always sent great messages in the form of writing. I joined odyssey because my voice could be heard on a global and nation platform. I also found out that odyssey is a resume builder.

These are just a few "whys" that exist in my life. These are some of my most recent "whys." My pastor just recently gave some great truths about the "why." Sorry, there's going to be a part 2 of this on next week. You all be looking out for it.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.

Some universities only get two or three days off for Thanksgiving break. Or, if your university is like mine, you get the whole week off go go home. A whole week off is a long time. Here are some ideas as to what you can do to get the most out of your Thanksgiving break.
