Actions speak louder than words, however, words contain a sufficient amount of potency. Do not underestimate the power of words for this specific reason. You either speak life or death with the tongue. Imagine yourself enduring excruciating physical chronic pain - pain that has the ability to engulf your mental capacity as well. This pain is caused by a disease presented to you at birth and has antagonized you ever since.
Now, imagine you seeking the assistance of a doctor in the emergency room. You're desperately asking for medication to ease such agony. The medical professionals insist you're just a hypochondriac with a pain medication addiction. Meanwhile you're being persecuted by this disease. Now what if someone told you to "Get Well Soon" as if you have the common cold or a sore throat.
These are typical trials and tribulations that warriors in the Sickle Cell Community face regularly. There are many misconceptions pertaining to the sickle cell disease such as Sickle Cell being communicable or that these warriors are "mentally challenged". First of all, you cannot simply "catch" sickle cell -sickle cell is innate. Whoever believes sickle cell warriors are mentally challenged are completely misinformed. In fact, I personally know a warrior who pens poetry that serves as a voice for the Sickle Cell Community. He goes by Quan Tha Poet. Inspired by Dreamville in the same fashion as I am. He wrote a poem entitled "Get Well Soon" that creatively emphasizes this ln message. So no, sickle-cell doesn't mean the host is mentally challenged. They aren't incapable of doing anything anyone else can do. So next time you meet a sickle-cell warrior treat them like one.
Previous studies have shown that over 3,000,000 children are born with sickle cell, however, the number is actually higher due to inaccurate statistics in third world countries.
