Close your eyes, breath slow and think of happy thoughts. Sounds like something Wendy is told in Peter Pan to help her fly, but really it's something important we need to be reminded of when we have a panic attack.
A panic attack is to not be taken lightly. In a second of weakness our mind is controlled by fear and anxiety. We believe that nothing will be OK and that everything is wrong. We think we cannot ever be OK ever again. The moment passes. We go on with our lives.
For those of you who do not understand what it is like to have a panic attack, I'll share with you the process of a panic attack.
You're getting ready for bed. You put on your pajama's, brush your teeth and look for your headphones because you need to listen to something while you sleep. But wait, where are your headphones? You look around, they're not under your bed, they're not in your backpack, they're nowhere to be found. It's not OK. If you don't have those headphones, then you can't sleep. If you can't sleep, then you'll fail your test tomorrow and be tired all day. You'll fail out of school. You won't be able to get a job. You'll be homeless. Finally you'll die. What is the point of life anyways? You stop, breath and remember everything is okay. You stop crying and go to sleep.
We cannot help getting these thoughts. We cannot force them to go away. We can only fight against them and in time they'll go away.
I promise in the end you'll get through it.
