Words have the power to be the most incredible tools. Words can make someone's day or break a heart. They have the ability to make people feel things they didn't know they could. There are over 100,000 words in the dictionary! Imagine the possibilities! Here are some of my favorite words! Not only my favorites, but ones I wish would become more commonly used since they are so wonderfully beautiful.
Mellifluous (adjective): A sound that is sweet and smooth; pleasing to hear.
You know when you’re out watching a sunset on the beach, and all you can hear is the sound of waves crashing and the wind blowing? Or when you wake up early that one summer morning and you’re surrounded by the sound of birds singing outside your window? Whatever that sound is, there’s a word made just for it!
Ineffable (adjective): Indescribable.
Remember your first report card that held straight A’s? Or maybe when your eyes first connected with those of someone you knew would soon become one of the most important people in your life? When you can’t put into words exactly how great something is, use your new favorite word!
Nefarious (adjective): Wicked; malicious.
Rather than referring to your archenemy as evil or wicked, you can always use nefarious! This is one of my favorite underused words. Not only does it sound evil, the spelling makes it even look a little evil.
Oblivion (noun): State of forgetting.
In my opinion, this is one of the most beautifully under-appreciated words in the dictionary. The idea of oblivion, the complete unawareness of your surroundings, is tragically beautiful to me. I think of it in such a positive way, I am unable to see it in any negative light. It reminds me of the times when I am surrounded with my favorite people, doing something I love, and I completely space out because of how comfortable and happy I am with my surroundings.
Solitude (noun): State of being alone.
Once again, I think of solitude in a positive manner. I think about those moments when you finally get a few minutes to yourself. I think about the times I’m staring at the beautiful sky, just me, and I’m completely alone with my own thoughts. Sometimes, a little bit of alone time is all you need.
Epiphany (noun): Sudden realization.
You know when you’ve studied so long for a test and then as soon as you sit down to take it, you just forget everything? And then after a little while of panicking, the light bulb goes off in your head and you remember? Or when you’ve been trying to work out an issue for what feels like forever and suddenly the solution just seems so clear? Those little moments of realization are the ones to always hold on to.
Ephemeral (adjective): Short-lived.
This is another word that makes me think of some of the happiest moments. It makes me think of those little memories that you know you’ll never forget, even though it was only a few short seconds. Maybe it was your first kiss. Or a moment of eye contact with your favorite band member as you stand, screaming front row at their concert.
I may not know every word in the dictionary, but these are just some of my favorite words I wish were more commonly used. From beautiful words to simply underrated, try to use them more often! Words can be fun, I promise.
