The amount of music our brain is able to memorize and store is ridiculous. It's especially surprising when you haven't heard a song in 5 or so years, but somehow remember all the words. Even as every day we hear more and more new music. But then, you hear that one song again, and it yanks you back in time to the place when you first heard it, and it embodied every emotion you could feel but didn’t know how to express. That song that makes you somehow remember exactly where you were when you first heard it, or the distinct smell of your surroundings. Or even a song that just “makes you feel some type of way”. You can’t shake the lyrics and the music just sticks to your soul for a few days.
Here are 15 underrated songs that do that for me:
15. Hold On – Walk Off the Earth
This one inspires me to never give up.
14. Trade Hearts – Jason Derulo
This one’s for the guys whose SO’s just don’t believe that you are in it because you are in love with them for their inner and outer beauty so you have to keep reminding them.
13. Good to Be Alive – Andy Grammar
When you nailed that one test, or got a date with your crush, or got that kiss, you feel like you are on top of the world. Well blast this song while you’re up there and you’ll feel like you’re flying.
12. Not Coming Home – Maroon 5
When you break up, and you move on when they didn’t think you could, and you’re so much stronger for it.
11. Lights Down Low – MAX
Just listen to it. The song was written by Max Schneider as a wedding proposal. You will literally understand love if you listen to it, I sh*t you not. And the wedding music video that is his Actual wedding, is on par with those “soldier coming home” videos that wreck your life. And if you make it to the end, when you hear a small chunk of monologue, whatever is left of your soul will melt.
10. Overdose – Alessia Cara
That one relationship that you knew was going bad, but you couldn’t bring yourself to end because you kept convincing yourself you could fix it. Yup, this song will make you remember that in a heartbeat. You know, actually….just avoid this song….
9. Together – Demi Lovato (ft. Jason Derulo)
This song totally reminds me of the whole Disney’s Friends for change thing, except it actually works and makes you feel like, you find the right friends you guys can literally solve any problem.
8. Hotel Ceiling – Rixton
I don’t really have a memory tied to this song. But if you listen to the lyrics and watch the music video it will stop your heart. Then, you won’t be able to figure out exactly why you feel so bad for the main character when you shouldn’t. But you will.
7. Symphony – Clean Bandit
This song summarizes so perfectly the feeling of having a new crush. If you do have one, Don’t play it because you won’t be able to take it off repeat, trust me….
6. Lot to Learn – Luke Christopher
Reminds me of growing up as a kid, and always making stupid mistakes, but learning from them and growing into a better person. I highly recommend the music video for this.
5. Send Them Off – Bastille
This song just automatically hits the soul of the teenager who just wants to be different and break free of what he is supposed to do. And he’s reaching out for help.
4. You & Me – Marc E. Bassy (ft. G-Easy)
I’m 90% sure this song is about breaking up with your SO, but It also works for friendships that ended. Because it’s not “Us” anymore; now it’s just “You” and “Me”.
3. May We All – Florida Georgia Line
If you listen to this song you will wanna raise a beer in cheers. It’s the essence of the American Dream and the perfect summer. Also, hands down one of the best music videos out there. Highly recommend.
2. Dog Days – Florence + The Machines
That feeling you have when all the hard work is over, its vacation time, or you’ve just simply made it through the toughest part of your life? Yea, this song is perfect.
1. Sunday Candy – Chance The Rapper
This song strangely just brings me joy. It reminds me of the simpler times of life when I was dragged to church every Sunday and seeing my grandma in the afternoon was always a treat.
