Lin Manuel-Miranda's hit Broadway sensation, Hamilton: An American Musical has taken the world by storm the last couple of years and has brought a whole new generation of Broadway fans to their knees. Throughout the two and a half hour soundtrack, it's easy to miss some of the best lyrics. Here are seven of the most underrated Hamilton lyrics, one for every founding father.
1. "Before your friend he was mine." - Alexander in Cabinet Battle #2
While Jefferson and Alex are bickering over how to handle the issue rising in France, our beloved Lafayette gets brought into the mix. The crisp, harsh, and overall rude tune in Alex's voice at the thought of his brother in arms building rebellions with anyone else is one of my favorite dynamics in the second act.
2. "The plan is to fan this spark into a flame." - Alexander in My Shot
This song itself (along with Hurricane) sends me over the moon and preps me for any challenge/work out. This is lyric also goes unnoticed in the mess of other masterpieces in My Shot, but deserves it's time to shine.
3. "We dream of a brand new start, but we dream in the dark for the most part." - Aaron in Room Where It Happens
As a person who relates strongly to both Aaron and Alex, I feel like this is reflective of both characters. Alex wasn't destined for greatness, he conned, lied, and wrote his way there. Burr is reaching his boiling point with Hamilton cheating his way to the top. Most people get caught up in the meat industry reference of this song that they miss out on what might be one of Burr's best lines
4. "I relish being your wife." - Eliza Hamilton in That Would Be Enough
The love Eliza has for Alex and the need she has for him to want to be with her too is one of the many heartbreaking elements of the musical.
5. "HAMILTON WROTE THE OTHER FIFTY-ONE." - Burr in Non-Stop
So maybe this one does get a lot of attention but honestly, I don't think it could ever get enough. This is still when Alex simply wants a chance to fight for something and stand for the chances he was never presented with otherwise.
6. "...and no one shall make them afraid." - Washington in One Last Time
Washington
7. "...my first friend, my enemy."
One of Hamilton's final lines and his feelings for Burr becoming transparent. I love this because I feel like this is Alex's moment when he begins to understand the toll the things he's done has taken on others.
