Chapter 2: Present

17
Underpass

Today: 2015

Alissa was on spring break from her senior year of college and she knew that the beach wasn't her scene. She didn't have a boyfriend, she didn't need one, but she did have a friend, Ty, who could be more but they hadn't got there yet. For the most part she lived for herself. She did what she wanted and made no excuses for it. She liked it that way. However, she did need something to do before her break was over.

Lissa was independent and had to be because her father recently started having issues with alcohol use, but it hadn’t always been that way. Growing up her parents tried to teach her to take control when she wanted something. So that is how she lived, she missed the way her family used to be though.

They were all a happy family once upon a time. Her childhood was filled with fun memories of her and her family playing games, watching movies together, and just sharing day’s events at the dinner table. Lissa wouldn’t let the turn of events break her, she had goals and she clung to the good memories and just hoped that they would get there again.

Since she was younger she had always loved paranormal stuff. She believed in ghosts and knew that her town was famous for having many haunted places. As a kid she would experiment with séances and conjuring spirits at slumber parties at other gatherings with her friends. It was fun, it never worked but it was still exciting. She knew that it could work at any time and that is what made it worth it.

Her whole life she had heard ghost stories about this spot by the big underpass on the South side of her hometown. She always listened to her parents and grandparents when they told her about a little boy that had lived in a house there that was murdered by his crazy mother. She was always intrigued and felt a little guilty for the boy. Now that she was able maybe she would go and check out the scene during her break.

In spite of the numerous unsolved murders that had happened in the area she was still curious maybe she would have Ty go with her. He might like a thrill too, and maybe this would be the make or break for their pending relationship. She decided to call Ty.

"Hey Ty, it's Alissa. What are you doing Friday?" She asked.

"Nothing as of right now, why what's up?" He asked.

"I was just thinking about going to the haunted underpass by highway 32 on the Southside, you want to go, maybe take some pictures, and try to see the boy ghost who lives there?"

"Mmm ghosts? I don't know Lissa, that's not my scene," he said. He was opposite of Lissa when it came to these things, he was not interested in ghosts or paranormal things. He preferred to keep things to what he knew.

"Come on chicken, it will be fun. Besides you'll be with me," she said half mocking him.

Ty hesitated because he liked Lissa.

"Come on, don't be scared I'll protect you," she said jokingly.

"I'm not scared I just don't mess around with spirits and stuff like that," he said, "but I guess if it means that much to you, I'll go."

Ty was unsure of his decision, but decided that no matter what he would try and protect Lissa during their adventure.

"Great I'll see you then, we'll head out about 8 p.m. grab something to eat and head that way," she said.

"Okay Lissa, see you then I'll be there to get you."

They both hung up, this was a good step in the right direction, she thought. She would do her research before Friday about the highway and the happenings there. She felt good about the hunt, maybe she could reach out to the little boy.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
