How many times have you seen a quiz on Facebook called How OCD are you? Have you ever taken one? Maybe it told you that you're really OCD and it probably showed you pictures of broken symmetry or of a line that wasn't completely straight. Have you ever stopped to think that these pictures don't truly represent the entirety of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
Have you ever heard people say “I'm so bipolar,” when they get really mad sometimes and have a single mood swing? It is common for people to say they are depressed by something when they don't have depression; in fact, it seems as if almost every mental illness is undermined on a daily basis.
Why is it that we don't take mental health seriously in America? In schools it isn't talked about outside of Psychology class -- the only people who really get to learn about it are those who are diagnosed. And teenagers today are being diagnosed more than ever before, yet we still make jokes and quizzes about something that is horrendous for those experiencing it.
So my challenge to you and to all is to start a discussion, to stop taking a quiz, or to speak up so that we can respect those who battle with their disorder(s) that plague their everyday life. Together we can care more about mental health and hopefully find more cures, treatments, and ways to support those who need it.
